Anyone running a 50amp breaker on a 55# 12V TM?

Very impressed with the transom TM rigging that Lund supplied on my new hull, Bussmann CB285-50 breaker and Marinco 70amp plug set. However, Minn-Kota shows my 55# 12V Traxxis as having a 50amp max amp draw, and recommends a 60amp breaker. Before I replace the breaker, anyone not popping a 50amp breaker running a 55# TM?

I don't have a 55# trolling motor and I understand where you're coming from HRG but why not follow Minnkota's recommendations? They make their recommendations for a reason. Circuit breakers are fairly inexpensive and it'd be easy to change it from a 50 amp breaker to a 60 amp breaker.

I completely agree, just sometimes I find myself second-guessing changing things out for no good reason.

Anyone need a 50amp breaker? hahaha, HRG

It is very likely that you could run the motor a long time and never pop the breaker.

But, if you are more comfortable with a 60 amp breaker than go for it.

Had a 50A installed when my 24V Terrova was installed. Would trip now & then, went to 60A hasen’t tripped since.

I have a 55 Traxxis on my Lund Fury xl and have never had an issue with the stock 50a fuse. I run max power on forward and reverse for an extended amount of time quite often and the fuse has never popped. Two different types of battery’s have also been used: lead battery for 4 years, an Amped 100ah lithium for the last two. I will say, the lithium battery was a huge upgrade.

Whether it trips or not must be hit and miss and somewhat dependent on manufacturing variances…

I have a Vector 3x 55lb and it will trip the 50A breaker when run for more than a few minutes at full speed. It’s also tripped when I’ve hit something that really loaded the prop.

Yet, I’ve not upsized it to accommodate.

Breakers are there to prevent overheating the wiring, which could cause a fire. I'm hoping I never have a fire in my boat.

That said, if the 50 amp breaker trips, TM manufacturer says 60 amp and the wiring from the battery to the TM plug is sufficient to carry 60 amps safely, put in a 60 amp breaker. Otherwise, treat it like a sore ___. Don't ___ with it.

When I bought my 80lb. Fortrex (24 volt) years ago, the manual said the motor draws 56 amp. of current at full speed so a 60amp. circuit breaker was recommended. The motor uses 6 gauge wire from the back of the boat to the bow. If the manual calls for a 60 amp. breaker then that is what you should use. I also disconnect the tm plug when charging, but you could buy a new circuit breaker with an on/off switch so you don't have to pull the plug.

I had a 12v Terrova trip a 50 amp breaker in some spot lock situations.The Xi5 I had never did it.
