Default One thing to consider when buying a baitcaster...

What model / size Curado would be a good allround size for Walleye and pike?

And best way to practice casting
One of the things to consider when buying a baitcaster is gear ratio.
Here is a link to an article on gear ratios in baitcasters:

http://www.insideline.net/il-online/...1-whitten.html

I ended up buying a Curado 200E5 with a 5:1 gear ratio for my applications
(bottom bouncing, 3-way rigging and deep cranking). My Calcuttas are 6.2:1
so this will add versatility to my lineup.
Bought the reel at Gander Mountain for $129 plus tax.

Default learning to use a curado

TT I have a couple Curado 200E7 reels that I am very happy with. The difference between the 200E5 and 200E7 is the retrieve speed. E5 is 5.0 to 1 and E7 is 7.0 to 1.

The Curado has two methods to adjust things from a casting perspective. There is a spool tension knob by the drag and then on the other side plate you can open it up and access what they call the VBS system. Basically you move little weights in and out to present more or less resistance to the spool during the cast.

I have a couple other bait casters and the Curado is the one I reach for the most, it might be a comfort thing but I really like that reel. I am interested to see what the new ones look like and cast like but until I bought a Curado I coudn't cast a baitcaster to save my life. Now I use them about 50/50 with my spinning gear.

The suggestion on getting used to casting is a good one. Use something heavy and don't use the same motion as you do with a spinning rod. The other thing that can help is to pull off a bunch of line and put a piece of tape on the spool and then wind the line back in that you pulled off. If you backlash the backlash will only be as deep as the tape.

I also got advice to use mono to start learning to cast. One its thicker so its easier to pick out the back lash and two its cheaper if you really make a mess of it.

Have a look on youtube, there are some decent videos on learning to cast a baitcaster.

Default Curado sale

In New Orleans, one retailer has them at 129.00 spooled with power pro. They said Shimano lowered the price until May 16 and they are going back up then. I have one that I paid 179.00 for last year without the free power pro. It is a nice reel. I usually use my Cronarchs as they are smaller.

I picked up two at BPS last year when they had them on special for $99. How could I pass that up?

Boy Carnhzkr you guys really went back to find this old post, didn't you?? You had me all excited until I saw the OP dates. 2011? I can't even remember back that far anymore.

See you on the water this summer maybe.

Better get your head out of the diesel fumes, sounds like that might be affecting your memory, and I'll start looking at the dates before I reply to old posts.

I have a Red Curado and it's still going strong after 15 + years. One of my favorite low profile reels. I would certainly buy another.
