Garmin mount connectors corrosion
Hi, my small Garmin gps mount has two 4 pin female connectors which look a little corroded. Sometimes it does not turn on fully and will flash a low brightness screen then turn off. Last year was my first season with the boat (bought used from original owner) and I would have to plug and unplug the Garmin to make it work sometimes. One trip out it didn't work at all but worked when I got back home after blasting it with electronics cleaner. First time out this year, I didn't test it first so on the water it wouldn't turn on. I poured some water on the connectors and blew on them and then they worked.
Is there something I could put on the connectors to dissolve the corrosion at all? They are too small to scrape with anything except maybe a needle. Or maybe it's time to replace them. Thanks https://imgur.com/a/PmJZT2U Last edited by GerGa; 05-13-2021 at 08:06 PM. |

Dielectric grease or vaseline should help.

I've tried dielectric grease but It didn't work. It shouldn't work because it is non-conductive.

Brasso on a Q-tip or toothpick.

Dielectric grease does not conduct. That is not supposed to, it prevents corrosion. I would guess, along with clean contacts they also need to hold well also if plugged and unplugged many times they will get loose. If they can't be tightened replacement might be your best answer. JMO Bob
